Mount Holly Prison

Mount Holly Prison was built in 1811 by architect Robert Mills as the Burlington County (NJ) Prison. It was extremely well constructed, leading it to be labeled the oldest continuously used prison...it operated as a prison for over 150 years before being shut down in 1965. It was actually the town's second prison-the first having been in the basement of the courthouse. It now operates as a museum.

As far as hauntings, the spirit of murderer Joel Clough, whom died here is said to still roam. Some people report detailed apparitions, while others report only shadowy beings. Objects have been known to levitate, and voices and strange sounds have been heard. Cell #5 seems to be the center of activity.

What a great photo! And interesting history, too, I love to find out about old buildings and landmarks. In this part of the country you don't find many really old buildings or historical sites and that was one thing I always enjoyed about my travels. Thanks!

I'm all for checking out haunted buildings, but I do believe I've watched one to many horror movies....to ever want to visit a haunted prison. Interesting history in any event. (Hugs)Indigo
